Know Yourself More

by Eduardo R. Pilapil Jr.

To know yourself more is where success begins.

The first principle is that you must not fool yourself -- and you are the easiest person to fool. -- Richard Feynman

Look well into thyself; there is a source of strength which will always spring up if thou wilt always look there. -- Marcus Aurelius

We all know ourselves to a certain degree. But we must not fool ourselves thinking that we know ourselves well.

The seasons of life change us. Our body changes. More mature people cannot run as fast when they were younger. The body quickly reacts to food that is eaten. You get the picture.

Our emotions also change as we grow older. We either have more control or less control of them. A new season in life may bring a new challenge to the emotions.

Knowing ourselves is a continual process. It never stops. The moment you stop, your mental anchors will always be in the past of long ago. That sounds Jurassic

Then how can we know ourselves more?

First, try to write down how you see yourself. You may start with your strengths and weaknesses. Continue by defining what you like and do not like. Analyze if these likes and dislikes are helpful for you.

Second, ask the closest to you – your family and friends - how they see you. Ask them to be honest but try not to react so they will not feel uncomfortable.

Third, take a personality test like the Briggs and Myers. Another recommended test is the DISC. The internet is full of tests that you can take free.

Fourth, see a professional counselor. Seeing a counselor does not mean you have problems. The good thing about professional counselors, they know how to listen and they know how to ask the right questions.

Fifth, do regular reflections. Learn to silence your thoughts and emotions. Be calm and slowly go through the day or week that was. How did you act or react? How did you perceive or judge others? Think of ways to improve yourself.

Sixth, find out other ways to know yourself.
